The EASA Part 66 license is the qualification that enables the holder with suitable type or task training to provide through organizational approval and in some situations directly the Certification of European registered managed or maintained aircraft to allow a Certificate of Release to Service either through EASA Part 145.A.50 or EASA Part M Subpart H CRS.

What will a Part 66 license allow me to do?

A Part 66 license is a pre-requisite to allow you with appropriate organizational approval to certify the release to service of aircraft after maintenance and to work in maintenance organizations as support staff. It should be noted that all education received in support of Part 66 Basic Aspirations must be acquired under the control and oversight of a Part-147 training organization approved by EASA. There is currently no conversion process available in non EU countries which allow for the issue of a Part 66 license it is necessary to follow fully the EASA Guidelines and process to obtain your Part 66 License.

Which are the Different Categories of Part-66 licenses?

Part 66 Cat A License permits Minor scheduled line maintenance and simple defect rectification as part of a Line Maintenance Operation (but only with company approval which requires task and practical training).

Part 66 Cat B1 Maintenance performed on aircraft structure, power plant and mechanical and electrical systems, avionic systems requiring simple tests to prove their serviceability and no troubleshooting as part of a Line Maintenance Operation requires license on type (Type rating) together with practical experience – may also function as support staff during Base Maintenance Approval.

Part 66 Cat B3 Maintenance activities on non-pressurized airplanes of 2000Kgs Maximum Take-Off Mass (MTOM) and below.

Part 66 B2 Maintenance performed on avionic and electrical systems and electric and avionics tasks within power plant and mechanical systems requiring only simple test and minor scheduled line maintenance and simple defect rectification as part of a Line Maintenance Operation requires license on type (Type rating) together with practical experience – may also function as support staff during Base Maintenance Approval.

How Long do I have to complete the modules required for my EASA Part 66 License?

According to Commission Regulation (EU) No 1149/2011 of 21 October 2011, the basic examinations shall be passed and experience shall be acquired within the ten years preceding the application for an aircraft basic license.

What is the requirement to maintain validity of my Part 66 License?

You require 6 months’ experience within the preceding 2 years but only if you require to maintain certification validity. The license itself is valid 5 years from the last renewal.
