SofemaOnline (www.sofemaonline.com) features European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) & Gulf Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) selection of Technical Terms to be found in Aircraft Technical Records.

Part 1 Airworthiness Directive

An Airworthiness Directive or AD is issued when there is a problem with the aircraft which MUST be resolved. AD are issued only by the Regulatory Authority – Federal Airworthiness Authority – FAA or EASA or CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) Compliance with AD’s is mandatory!

Airworthiness Limitation Item

An Airworthiness Limitation or (ALI) is issued after the design analysis has been carried out. So they are typically available at the delivery of the very first aircraft. Compliance with ALI’s is also mandatory.

Acceptable Means of Compliance

An Acceptable Means of Compliance is the normal and expected way by which a regulatory requirement should be complied with.
Typically there is no deviation from an AMC unless there is specific approval from the regulator (very difficult to get unless it is for a simple alternate tool or documented procedure change).

Aircraft Maintenance License

To certify an aircraft as serviceable after a task has been performed is performed by a certifying Engineer.

“A” licensed engineer may certify simple tasks following line maintenance only.
“B1” licensed engineer may certify more complex tasks and has a type rating on the aircraft type. Covers Airframe Engine and Electrics
B2” licensed engineer may certify more complex tasks and has a type rating on the aircraft type. Covers Airframe Engine and Electrics
“C” Licensed Rating is able to certify Base Maintenance which consists of large checks – usually “C” checks and above

A single signature releases the aircraft from Base Maintenance check which may in fact contain some 1000’s of tasks.
During base maintenance the individual tasks which are sign for are not in fact certifications merely a record of who has completed the task.
Normally the company will identify what people are allowed to sign for during base maintenance.

Approved Maintenance Organization

An organisation which holds an EASA 145 GCAA 145 or other 145 approval and is able to perform and certify maintenance in accordance with the scope of its approval
