Now that we know the exposure which we face from FOD we should also understand the importance of FOD training!

Dealing with the Challenge of Training Adults

The first point to understand is that adults learn best when they understand the reason behind the training – so this becomes the first challenge.

To share the importance not just of FOD training, but of really following FOD procedures to ensure that we remove any possibility of personally being involved in the production of FOD. Moreover we understand the obligation which we share to correctly dispose of any FOD we see whilst we are working.

Training can be delivered on line or in a classroom environment and becomes an opportunity to share information including the challenges of encouraging people to follow the FOD “rules”.

Training New Employees

It is good practice to ensure that New Employees do not start work until they have successfully passed through a FOD Training Program.

What should be in the training?

All attendees should receive documentation regarding the FOD program.

- Definitions and Abbreviations
- Who is responsible for FOD within the Organisation and how to report FOD issues
- A Shared understanding of what is involved in dealing with FOD
- A personal copy of FOD Standard operating Procedures (SOP’s)
- Understanding Roles and Responsibilities related to “Clean-As-You-Go”
- Identify any applicable FOD control areas and the relevant procedures within these areas
- How the tool control procedures work
- Tool missing procedures

It is very advantageous if you have examples of FOD which has been recovered from the workplace and bagged for display.

In particular any evidence of equipment or components which have been damaged by FOD is very valuable – even in a photographic form.

Recurrent F.O.D. Training

Whilst recurrent training is not mandated good practice indicates that recurrent training should be performed every 24 months as a minimum.

As well as a refresh the best and most effective FOD recurrent training focuses on the specific relevance of the particular organisation.

The recurrent training provides an ideal opportunity to share what is working well as well as any areas where there is a perceived under performance.

To examine or not?

Small exams provide an opportunity to ensure memory retention, by setting a multi choice exam which focuses on the key areas and messages which we wish to get across we can make a positive difference and to provide the delegates with positive feedback.

Note that the FOD program should be progressive and dynamic – not to deliver the same training time after time – to change 30% of the program each year is a good target and means for a 24 month recurrent the training will be more than 50% different.
